K-Delight presents FRESH FOR 86

The new K-Delight album is a tribute to the legendary UK FRESH 86 concert and icons of that time Morgan Khan, Chep Nunez, Mantronik and the incredible Mike Allen.Its an epic mix tape in the traditional sense as it has been recorded with OLD SCHOOL definatly being the theme. Recorded using an old Yamaha multi track tape machine (finding somewhere selling high quality tapes is a story in itself) then mixed down into Cubase where the edits where applied like a wannabe Chep Nunez.

All original vinyl used too, with crackles and all. The album contains original audio from the UK Fresh concert tapes, there's snippets of the legend that is Mike Allen, words of wisdom from Arthur Baker and more cutting and scratching than a possessed Edward Scissor hands!

Even the art work has been specially produced by North East graffiti pioneer Nikos. His style fitted the brief perfectly to give the listener not only an audio but a visual trip back in time to the eighties.

Gravious, otherwise known as Alistair Jackson, is one of Glasgow's finest proponents with a fresh take on Dubstep. Having recently returned from his first ever Australian tour, he is full of energy and as he talks about the ideas and sounds behind his latest release, the 'Futurist EP', which is already gaining radio support and exposure from DJ's such as Mary Anne Hobbs and Ikonika (You can find 'Jupiter Jazz' on Ikonika's recent mini-mix for Vice magazine

Ali started making music in 2001 after being shown the basics of DIY production by a friend. After experimenting in a variety of styles, he was converted to the fresh sounds of Dubstep, Dark Garage and Broken Beat after hearing the selections of DJs such as J Da Flex and Femme Fatale in early 2004. From this starting point, he quickly discovered the bass-heavy productions of Kode9, Digital , Horsepower, Skream, Groove Chronicles and Ghost – and was instantly hooked.

Taking inspiration from these sounds, Gravious also brought in elements from his wider musical tastes in both electronic and traditional music to add new perspectives. Artists most inspirational to him include The Sound of London, Boards of Canada, LTJ Bukem, Kyuss, Aphex Twin, and Autechre.

This is Gravious' fifth release, with 4 previous records under his belt through the HotFlush imprint, on both the main label and the Scuba sub-label.

10-20's self titled album is a claustrophobic hulk of a release, constructed from parts of discarded machinery, short-circuiting currents of krautrock, broken hip hop structures, dense aquatic substreams and spectral elements, all of which are funnelled towards a single cohesive hypnotic pulse.
Based in devon, the coastal and elemental forces of the producer's hometown are evident in the scope of intricate sounds layered and woven into rough shorn textures, where only a filtered ghostly impression of club-land's influence can be discerned within the resultant sound.
Displaying a versatility in composition the album follows an arc from opening track 'miluvs''s vaccum sealed melody, the vertiginous ascent of 'nei'; the viscous sluggishness of 'jjuvxszla', confused machine-funk of 'wdtrhjvelgrad', and the amniotic warmth of 'InB'; culiminating in the post-gravitational trajectory of 'arcadeagle' and dub-soaked pressure of 'sA' before the elegiac closing descent of 'unde'.

Something new on Highpoint Lowlife by Production Unit, resident DJs at Glasgow's monthly wonky/dubstep/techno night, Numbers, (where Rustie, Jackmaster and that whole crew also stem from), and alongside The Village Orchestra, he's also one of the members of long running art terrorist music makers, The Marcia Blaine School For Girls.

Two distinct tracks woven together through a maximal use of low-end and dancehall derived rhythms and space:
The more technoid attack of 'A Little Hope' comes on with a thundering beat and a snaking synthline, before the wall of bass surges forward and shredded vocal textures create a hypnotic hook, all building toward an epic finale, before finally collapsing into a shimmering pool of syrupy ambience.

'Dem Sirens' on the other hand is a languid and woozy half time steppa, with a slow kick drum pounding out an incessant and skewed, almost hip hop beat, punctuated with finger clicks and tightly locked transparent layers of synth and melody, like a skunk hazed boogie down productions instrumental.

Maybe known to many of you but this label, which incidentally has been going for 25 years, has up until a couple of weeks ago completely passed me by, and I admit that quite ashamedly. Trumpett has an astonishing back catalogue, squarely in the experimental / synth sound, I urge you to check this label out. Been a strange year musically for me, whilst I have been buying new releases the majority of music purchased this year has been older electro, italo, obscure oddities. But heres a round up of the our fave 20 releases (represses and bootlegs) from 2008

1. Conrad Schnitzler - Rare Tracks 1979 - 1982. Erkrankung Durch Musique
An EP collecting four works from Avant Garde musician Conrad Schnitzler including the superb track 4:08 to Paris

2. Dogs Of War - S/T LP Electunes
The Electunes label has unearthed a couple of delights this year and this obscure disco LP from Dogs Of War was the highlight. I believe this was a late 2007 release but did not appear in the shops here until 2008 so i'll sneak it in to the 2008 top twenty.

3. Peter Green - The Darkness : Catalyst CDR
An essential piece of Modern Classical from Peter Green, this release truely blew us away!

4. Zomby - Liquid Dancehall / Strange Fruit - Ramp Recordings
I must admit with the exception of a few Dub Step tunes this genre has pretty much passed me by. This 12" from Zomby however was an essential purchase in 2008 simply for the old skool sounding Bleep meets dub step track Strange Fruit

5. Lovely Jon - Mean Dog Blues : CDR Mix
Our fave mix so far from Lovely Jon / Jigoku. This is an extremely limited edition mix of lowdown biker rock, raw psych, punk, garage, and beyond! Get it!!

6. Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald - ReComposed 2LP
Minimal techno meets Classical from the two masters of the game.

7. Mujava - Township Funk
Well deserves a place in the top twenty, one of those tunes that once heard stays with you and musically a complete breath of fresh air

8. Unabombers present Electric Chair RIP EP - Tirk 12"
Again nothing new on this EP just three solid classics. Gave me the chance to get two tracks off my wants list on one 12" with the Joubert Singers sweet Stand On The Word and Daniel Wang's - Like some dream *saved me a few pennies this 12"

9. Zomby - Where Were U In '92?
Zomby Pops up again with Where Were U in 92, an album which fuses killer old skool hardcore / amen breaks with Dub Step. Why was this only released on CD though??

10. Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Angles 2LP - Sunday Best
Hands down our fave hip hop LP of 2008

Drummed our fingers awaiting this release for ages, got it upon release and after numerous listens still not tired of listening to it

12. Andrew Weatherall v The Boardroom - Rotters Golf Club CD
In this top 20 squarely for the inclusion of the ESC track The Legacy mixed by Andrew Weatherall. A brilliant tune, anyone know if this is due to be released on vinyl?

13. Explorer LP - X Records
Only just released but 100% needed to go in here. This 1982 LP from Tony carey under the name Explorer is incredibly rare and hard to find but its just been released (bootlegged?) so snap one up!

Kanye West : Champion : Cousin Cole Mixes (Flagrant Fowl)

This is a dub version of the “Champion” remix that’s going to be on the next Flagrant Fowl 12″. The 12″ version is an uptempo mainstream house flip on the original Kanye beat with the lyrics intact. For this dub Cousin Cole changed the drum loop, brought up the acid lines, did a new arrangement and reduced the vocals to just a few snippets.

Kwaidan

Kwaidan is a one-off project inspired by Masaki Kobayashi's movie of the same name. Mat Ranson, known more for his work under his Fisk Industries guise, turns his hand to a longer format narrative, dispensing with his more usual hip hop styled rhythms for a more fluid darker style of slow burning techno.

Awash with kinetic energy, the music bristles with texture and ghostly treated sound sources, aiming to hint at the eerieness of Kobayashi's original ghost stories. Two tracks, each close to 12 minutes, and wound around a similar trajectory, built upon intricate punchy drum programming, pounding out an incessant rhythm with waves of sawblade synths vying for attention against an aggresive low-end bass, trying to rend and pull apart the forward motion.

Using the longer time frame, themes are able to fully develop and be explored with subtle nuance, slowly building up a sense of dread and claustrophobic foreboding, whilst simultaneously allowing more space for the sound to breathe, and a more natural flow and ebb to the listening experience.

This is the first in Highpoint Lowlife's series of digital 12"s - high quality mastered releases, available exclusively only as FLAC or 320kbps MP3s.

Discodeine is Pilooski and Benjamin Morando. This track is just beautiful.
Glissandro 70 "End West"
I like how open this song is at the beginning with the loose animal sounds and polyrhythmic percussion. I love when that hard drum drops in over the tapestry and the afrobeat horns come in just after. I can't help but think that the title is a play on West End Records given that the album artwork is an interpretation of the famed label's cityscape logo. My loose joints are getting looser!
Yeasayer "Sunrise (Pocketknife's Rise and Shine Remix)" White Label
Promo alert! All of the Pocketknife remixes that appear in my section of the mix will be on an upcoming EP entitled "Canyon Dancing." This remix keeps the structure of the original, but just adds the right elements to get the beardos & hippie-sters prancing around. I'm a big fan of what this band is doing.
Soft Circle "Earthed (Pocketknife's Terra Cotta Remix)" White Label
Hisham Baroocha is that dude. When I heard the bassline of this track it immediately reminded of old Chicago house. I decided to really push those tendencies, but keep the tribal nature of the original. My favourite part is the drum workout in the middle.
Gang Gang Dance "House Jam (xxxchange Remix)"
Gang Gang Dance has got a great set of diverse influences and they add up nicely. It's my kind of "world music." When I saw that xxxchange had remixed them I about fell out of my chair. I love his work with Spank Rock and as usual he turns in another great remix.
Twilight Circus Dub Sound System "Kik"
It took me awhile to figure out how to get a Twilight track into a mix, but at last here it is. I like the dub update that Twilight has produced and you can still hear some of the industrial music influences the dude was involved with before. Gang Gang has riddim influences, so it seemed great to create that little connection between the two. The transition into this song is my favourite one of the mix.
Liars "A Visit From Drum (Pocketknife's großer Kessel Remix)" White Label
These dudes I would sacrifice a lamb or Williamsburg virgin for. They've managed to keep their sound evolving and Drums Not Dead is one of my favourite concept albums. I've wanted to remix a Liars song for a while now and this one had a nice pagan symmetry (with incredibly mic'ed drums!) that allowed for a great reworking.
Jandek "Your Other Man (Secret Frequency Crew Remix)"
My man Adrian aka Michna, hooked me up with his crew's Jandek remix. Adrian normally drops classic electro heat, but here he takes the original and adds the right elements to give the song an additional haunting character. The 7" actually comes with a facsimile of the correspondence they had with Jandek who gave the official thumbs up for the remix.
Gameplayers "Henri Texier" White Label
I stumbled upon these Belgian dudes while looking for other peeps who had remixed Beirut. Their remix of the Henri Texier song, "Le Piroguier," is minimal, but so effective. The metronomic percussion/claps adds to the overall hypnotic quality of the original and I dig the added sound effects as well.
Patti Smith "Ghost Dance (Pocketknife's Arms Out Remix)" White Label
There are a handful of Patti Smith songs that I think are incredible. I don't listen to her music on a regular basis, but she's a pioneer and I respect that. I dug through her catalogue in hopes of finding something with remix potential and this song's ceremonial chants jumped at me. I'd like to think that the Bowery has a lot of ghosts dancing past CBGBs late at night.
Bat For Lashes "Trophy"
Natasha Khan is the girl you wanted to roll with in art school. Her entire concept for the band is great (videos, visual identity, and most importantly the music). When I heard her album, it sounded like something that I would have liked to produce. I love handclaps, marching rhythms, harpsichords and tambourines – it's all there in her world. This werewolf would love to steal her gold coins!

Ed Drury is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who writes music for film and television. He plays in the region of 60 instruments including members of the woodwind, brass, strings and percussion sections and in his spare time he performs, teaches and writes about the Australian Didgeridoo. Ed has featured on countless albums over the years by literally hundreds of artists from around the globe.

Craig Murphy is a musician, composer and producer of experimental music and a multimedia artist working with abstract music videos. Having established the rising Herb Recordings imprint in his native Scotland, Murphy's own output resembles that of a musical odyssey. An obsession with Frank Zappa has seen to a fascination with experimentation and Murphy's many projects span several genres. From the mechanistic, yet poignant electronica of Solipsism, his electro-psychedelic band shoosh with Neil Carlill and multi-instrumentalist Ed Drury, to his recent ambient outlet ch.pm. Murphy's distinctive sound is often abstract, yet retains a rich, melodic and emotional edge.

The Highpoint Lowlife Label continues to push the boundaries of electronic music with their new release by Erstlaub with I Am The Line Drawn In The Sand Between The Living And The Dead. Isolationism / ambient / sweeping atmospheric drones are the order of the day on this release, but if any of that sends you scurrying for your latest Diplo mix CD then fear not, as whilst this release does require a delicate ear, its by no means harsh or sonically aggressive.
I am the line gradually builds and takes the listener on a dark electronic trip across its 46 minute duration. The piece was recording in one take using a Nord G2 engine and a couple of delay units with no overdubs or edits.
Many lovers of experimental music have probably at one time or another sat through a lengthy piece of minimal experimental music, only to have it pass them by and then the CD is promptly ejected and left forgotten in the rack, this on the other hand, I feel, many will come back to again and again.

Men and Women Release South America Digital EP and 12" Vinyl on War and Moon Records

We are proud to announce the release of the South America EP by NYC-based MEN AND WOMEN on War and Moon records on July 22nd on Limited Edition 12" vinyl.

Formed in the late summer of 2006, Men and Women's Jamie Granato and Brad Frost hail from opposite ends of the United States, and met in New York while working in a record store. Both share a passion for music and film and incorporate the two into their live performance, creating a multimedia atmosphere that envelops the audience. They have been playing together regularly and performed a handful of shows ahead of this release, with many more planned in support.

The music on South America is ambient, drone and has a kraut-influenced disco sound, with incredible slow-building ethereal arrangements. On the B-Side, Men and Women invited friends ELIOT LIPP (Mush, Eastern Developments) and COUSIN COLE (Flagrant Fowl) to remix and reinterpret the title track of the EP, to fabulous results.

The South America EP is the first in an ongoing series of Men and Women EPs, available digitally and in limited edition 12" vinyl, on War and Moon. The spirit of future releases will be similar to the South America EP, inviting friends to collaborate and remix

Funckarma : Dubstoned EP1

The Highpoint Lowlife Label are set to drop a brand new EP from Funckarma in the latter part of this month. Made up of two Dutch brothers, Don and Roel Funcken, Funckarma released their first EP in 1999 on the Djak-Up Bitch (DUB) label. Since then they have unleashed a fury of releases on labels from Neo Ouija, n5MD, U-Cover, to Hymen, not including their work under other guises such as Cane, Quench, and their hip hop project with a trio of US MC’s under the name Shadow Huntaz, released on Skam records. We recently heard its five tracks and can confirm that the Funcken brothers have produced a cracking EP, imagine the Funckarma of old with their crunchy electronic wall of sound styled beats, abstract but accessible electronic rhythms and then throw some Dubstep influences into the mix.

As well as releasing the EP, Funckarma will also be promoting the release of the record with two rare UK appearances, one at Plastic People in London on June 25th and another at Bristol's The Cube Cinema on June 27th. Support from Hyperdub's Ikonika, and Highpoint Lowlife's Fisk Industries.

Resident Advisor #104 : Quiet Village

Joel Martin and Matt "Radio Slave" Edwards are the two men that make up Quiet Village, but it might be more accurate to say that the records that Martin and Edwards own are Quiet Village. Silent Movie, their debut full-length, is about as sample-heavy as any hip-hop offering, utilizing obscure and not-so-obscure sources to create up 21st century update on loungey exotica. Martin and Edwards aren't so much beat merchants, though, as much as they're interested in vibes. Silent Movie is a voyage into Balearic territory, where '50s eccentricity sits alongside the Chi-Lites and dub matches well with Italian film soundtracks.
The same can be said for the duo's RA podcast. An hour-long home-listening mix, the duo floats along with some of their favourite records in tow, including a healthy dose of dub (Rhythm & Sound, Jackie Mittoo), ambient, downtempo and even a little bit of Led Zeppelin.

The pure techno classic House Of God from DHS gets yet another remix, proving once again how important the record actually is. This time its Ortin Cam aka Tom Macoye giving the track a workover, thankfully keeping the twisted cymbol sounds, heavy stomping beats and eerie vocal sample. Personally no mix will ever be as essential as the original but this is still a fine addition.

8. Various Artists : Obsession - Bully Records CD
Excellent compilation of psychedelic rock from all over the world courtesy of Bully Records. The stuff here is from all over the world, incredibly hard to find and lovingly compiled with details of all the artists. The bands span continents, from India, South America and Turkey, bringing in local styles alongside music from Europe and America. The album was put together by Mike Davis of Academy Records in NYC with DJ Signify as executive producer.

9. Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles CD
First full length release from Crystal Castles and worthy of a place in anyone's collection. A mixture of the bands early hard to find tracks and a few new cuts.

V/Vm new releases

We are big fans of the V/Vm Test label around these parts, how could you not love a label where one of its earliest releases, back in 1998, was a project where V/Vm broke, scratched, split, taped and hammered 12" vinyls before packing them in bubble wrap sleeves in zip-lock bags with an A4 sheet with instructions to shoplift the vinyl from the shop it was placed in. Also without V/Vm, its very possible I would of not heard of one of my fave artists Goodiepal, as I first discovered his output on the DemonBag picture disc 7" series V/Vm released.

So its always a pleasure to hear of new releases and next month they treat us to not one, but two new releases.

First up, released on April 3rd, but available to pre order now, is a new 12" entitled "There was a fish..in..the percolator" V/Vm return once again to the town of Twin Peaks, culling audio and spoken word from this Northern American town. Following on from "the owls are not what they seem" a 7"single released on English Muffin in 2001. Limited to just 175 copies, V/Vm raise the bar with the standard of packaging on this, each comes in an individually numbered red, brown or green silk screen printed sleeve by Berlin artist Motorboy.

Each copy also includes a detailed reproduction of the map found in Owl Cave. All the clues are there showing you how to enter the black lodge. Each map is numbered and signed. The centre label of the vinyl has been hand numbered on the A-Side and features the symbolic sycamore trees (hand drawn) around the centre label, whilst the B-side is signed and features David Lynch's own equation for Killer Bob

As well as the vinyl record you also get access to MP3's of the 12" plus the 2001 "Owls are not what they seem" 7". More info, images, sound samples and to buy your copy can all be found on V/Vm.

The second release on V/Vm Test for April is by The Stranger entitled "Bleaklow" again this is available to pre order right now. Available in two versions, a regular version and the deluxe expanded version. Both versions have a great attention to detail and are hand produced, with each coming in a silk screen printed sleeve by artist Motorboy with the regular in a dark grey / blue card sleeve and the expanded version in black on black printed sleeve. The expanded version is limited to just 100 copies and as well as the standard Bleaklow tracks also includes MP3 downloads of an additional 14 tracks.

As mentioned above both releases are available right now to buy and they will be shipped around the first week in April

Ahh the folks at Suckadelic have just dropped their newest creation, the Sucklord 660 self Bootleg figure. So used to bootlegging other classic toys (including our fave the Gay empire stormtrooper) they have now bootlegged their own creation with the Sucklord 660. Limited to just 20 pieces, all with custom paint jobs and carded like the old Star Wars figures.

Being a big Unkle fan I was looking forward to this forthcoming Surrender x Medicom 400 + 100% Bearbrick (Surrender being James Lavelles new brand), however first impressions are, whilst the face is nice, i'm not sure on the body. Ok so this is a prototype so it may go through a few changes, and I like the idea of the colour changing torso as it reacts in heat, I'm just not sure about the underwear.

Label Check : Dissident

London based record label Dissident output started appearing in specialist record shops, at the tail end of last year, first as limited edition presses of 100 copies and later at (still very limited) 200 copies apiece. Run by Andy Blake, who also records on the label under the aliases : Invincible Scum, SCS and Control Voltage. Dissident is defininetly one to check, the output so far has been, well to say the least, eclectic but most importantly setting a very high standard and quality.

From the minimal techno of Caja De Ritmos and Columbia #1 (with its nifty Star Trek sample), deep electro from Gweilo and Italo cosmic disco sounds from Binary Chaffinch and Ali Renault (one half of Heartbreak)

Well worth a punt, the releases are not cheap but worth every penny!!

Its no secret that I love (a) vinyl records (b) reworks and remixes and (c) Depeche Mode. The band always seem to coax some of the cream of the crop electronic music artists to rework their tracks (Carl Craig, Underground Resistance, DJ Shadow, Unkle, Dave Clarke to name but a few) so the release of this LP + bonus CD pack from Dep Mode frontman Dave Gahan was great news, however it was originally slated for a US only release. Go Lucky Neko

My Internet chum and all round good chap Delme, recently posted pictures of the first prototype for the Go Lucky Neko figure. Set to be a blind boxed mini figure series, these have been in the works for quite some time, so its great to see things finally coming to fruition.

The above prototype, and indeed the forthcoming Go Lucky Neko series, measures approx 3" inches and was sculpted by Dave Bondi. Chuffed that things are looking good for Go Lucky neko.

One for the calender, Autechre will present a live Internet radio show, streaming via their official web site next month on Feb 23rd. Should be well worth a listen.
Also the new Autechre ; Quaristice release, as mentioned on this very blog before, is now available as a download in MP3 and FLAC formats, but possibly more exciting is the limited x 1000 copies special edition 2CD set of Quaristice available as a pre order right now from those fine folk at Warp Records.
It features the 20 track Quaristice album, plus an extra CD containing 11 different versions of selected tracks. These tracks are all produced by Autechre and are exclusive to this edition of the album. The double CD set comes in a Designers Republic styled, photo-etched, 0.4mm steel slipcase with foil blocked inner gatefold wallet.

FLUORESCENT GREY : GASEOUS OPAL ORBS - RECORD LABEL RECORDS

The kind folk at Record Label records sent us a copy of the forthcoming CD from Fluorescent Grey, the solo project of Californian Robbie Martin.

This release has a plethora of styles, however its feet are firmly set in the experimental darker side of electronic music with flourishes of Dub, Ambient, Traditional Instrumentation, Click glitch IDM and even some Celtic flute on the track Celtic K-Hole, which sounds like an updated remix of the superb 1989 Toss The Feathers track "Skidoo".

The opener to Gaseous Opal Orbs, a sprawling 11 minute track ; Chrono-Synclastic Infundibulum, starts with gentle clicks spread across twisted deep found sounds, before building into a sonic assault with some glitched up breaks that will excite any avid V Snares fan.

Originally slated to drop on Isolate Records, like his previous CD: Lying On The Floor Mingling With God In A Tijuana Hotel Room Next Door To A Veterinary Supply Store, this is now due for release on Record Label Records on February 29Th.

For fans of Lo-fi melodic electronics, gentle leftfield pop and general sunday afternoon sounds would do well to check the relatively new label Aeiou from Spain. Six releases in, each mini CDr is limited to just 50 copies and comes packaged in great homestyle artwork sleeves with a toy inside and all brightly coloured paper bits (thats the best way I can describe them)

Aeiou reminds us very much of the superb Slow Loris records, again a label that uses mini CDr for their output and puts a lot of thought, not only in the content musically, but also the artwork (past releases on Slow Loris have included an origami fox sleeve and the individually hand stitched wagtail sleeves for the Northstation album)

With this fresh paint Martin explores the strange and beautiful world of Rock & Roll, vivid colours and mythology. Alongside the works of Ontiveros there will be custom Ojo's and artwork from amongst others Gargamel, Bwana Spoons, Mark Nagata and Le Merde

A tiny interview with Martin:

grass hut- So you graduated from Cal Arts along with the inventor ofthe Power Puff Girls, do you see any common trends in line work and character design from the artists who go through that school?

Martin : There were two schools of animation at CalArts, Experimental andCharacter. I was in the former, which meant that we were allowed to doanything we wanted, traditional cell or 3D or whatever, at our own pace and with minimal structure. We were encouraged to explore our ownvisions and explore new ways of making animated films. Experimentalworked more from the angle of animation as short art films than assomething that would develop into a series on TV, not to say that alumni from there didn't wind up doing such things (for example,Stephen Hillenburg, who created Spongebob Squarepants, Henry Selick,director of Nightmare Before Christmas and others, Jorge Gutierrez,creator of El Tigre, and Brad Bird, who worked on the Simpsons and is the genius behind Pixar were all from my program). I never made a filmmyself though. Character Animation, which was the school that Craig McKracken graduated from, was way more structured in that it taughtstudents everything from the mechanics of constructing a film to the history of animation to character design itself, a true program withteachers straight out of the industry itself. Most of them were reallyyoung, right out of high school (versus the older crowd ofExperimental) and were actively following what was going on at the time in popular animation, all fans of the same stuff, and allimpressionable by what they dreamed of being a part of. When I startedCalArts, indie and alternative animation was just gaining popularity--Ren and Stimpy, Spike and Mike, Nickolodeon, and later on, Cartoon Network's original programming-- so suddenly there was more to offerthan just getting a job at Disney. More opportunity to be a maverick inline work and character design, and if not that, than at least more productions to get a job on. So, I guess the answer is yes... Jesus,could I have spent more time answering this?

GH : How is this new show at the Hut different from the solo you had at Giant Robot the other month?

M : The GR2 show wound up being a catharsis of all these emotions I hadbeen harboring for the year prior. The art was the natural outcome ofhaving gone through some heavy stuff and yet having worked and created through it regardless, resulting in some of my best work to date. Likedrinking a mix of all kinds of things that aren't necessarily good foryou and puking out rainbows in the end. Having said that, I think it exhausted me in a way too-- I'm still too burned out to load the newstuff with all the color that went into GR2. This new show is a switchto something simpler, lighter in mood, subject, and spectrum, and just plain fun. It's all about my deep love for Rock N' Roll and HeavyMetal, combined with mythology, and the cheesier the composition, thebetter. It's a new year, a lot of things have been resolved or are on another, more positive course. I'm in strange new territory and I wantto have fun. When this is all over, I'll get back to the big-colorthing.

GH : What's Ojo Rojo's story, what's he stand for?

M : Story...? I guess you could say he's a bit of an alter-ego. He smilesall the time. He has cooler hair than me. His fashion sense is somewhatglam, which is a look that I could never pull off. He's a character I can throw into any piece and he would brighten it up. I don't know ifit's the grin, the hair, or the boots, but he gets some good response.His name is kind of a fluke-- I tend not to title things until the last minute... I like to see what I come up with spur of the moment. In hiscase, I was titling everything in the show he premiered in after rocksong titles, and since he had red eyes, I used Ojo Rojo from a FuManchu song. I wish it could be more extravagant a story than that, but there you have it. Good song too.

GH : What's you connection with the Japanese kaiju (monster toy)company Gargamel? How is Gargamel different from other kaiju-makers?

M : I met and became aware of Gargamel through Bwana Spoons. We shared a room with them at Comic-Con 2006. They knew very little english, weknew very little japanese, and we had a blast regardless. I'm not thebiggest expert on vinyl out there, I don't collect much since I don't have the money, plus I'm really selective about what I get, and won'tbuy something just because it's the hot thing out there-- so my opinionis sort of limited about the vinyl world. It's really up to the tastes of the makers and collectors as to what's cool. That said, I love Gargamel best personally because they are in league with my taste in kaiju--they hail back to the aesthetic glory of Bullmark and Marusan,the older days of vinyl. I don't really see anyone else out there doing it that way (except Super 7 and Max Toy), and that's why I'm into Gargamel. That we are pals with a strong mutual admiration for each other's work is just the icing on the cake. Those guys are fun!

GH : What is going to make 2008 two thousand great?

M : Grass Hut, duh! And going to Japan for the first time, that will definitely help.

Gargamel New Year

The postman kicked off my new year with an amazing surprise this morning. She knocked and handed me a clear cylinder which took me by surprise.
Sent direct from Gargamel Japan with a postcard insert signed with a Happy New Year greeting was this mysterious Gargamel monk? mouse. In dark turquoise soft vinyl with what appears light silver spray.

Hands down our fave New Years surprise ever!!

We have no info on this at all, whether it will later appear as a production figure remains to be seen. Thank you so much Gargamel!!

Thom Yorke Gets The Remix Treatment

Radiohead's Thom Yorke has had a few of the tracks from his debut solo CD : Eraser, remixed and reworked. These first officially popped up for download on the XL website and later on the UK online record shop Boomkat just before Christmas. All the mixes will in early 2008 be available on various formats. Some choice names were drafted in to rework the tracks.
