Gulp Communications

Support the independents!! East London based label Gulp Communications sent me a couple of MP3's from Andrew Friendly and The Rivers

Download : Andrew Friendly : Bump & Grind 08 Remix
The track that launched the Friendly career to the next level in the UK is back, with a fresh new mix for 2008. The original was caned by everyone from the Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Fatboy Slim (who put it on one of his comps), every self-respecting breaks DJ, through to house and electro DJs, and is considered one of the biggest classics in breaks. It was remixed by Krafty Kuts and Santos. It was always sitting at the housier end of breaks, and it’s now been given a relick to bring it firmly into 2008, and a whole new life. And it’s right on target to become a classic all over again, this time to a whole new audience.

Men and Woman : South America EP

Nice new remix from Cousin Cole on a new EP from Men and Women

Download : Men and Women : South America - Original Version
Download : Men and Woman : South America - Cousin Cole Remix

Men and Women Release South America Digital EP and 12" Vinyl on War and Moon Records

We are proud to announce the release of the South America EP by NYC-based MEN AND WOMEN on War and Moon records on July 22nd on Limited Edition 12" vinyl.

Formed in the late summer of 2006, Men and Women's Jamie Granato and Brad Frost hail from opposite ends of the United States, and met in New York while working in a record store. Both share a passion for music and film and incorporate the two into their live performance, creating a multimedia atmosphere that envelops the audience. They have been playing together regularly and performed a handful of shows ahead of this release, with many more planned in support.

The music on South America is ambient, drone and has a kraut-influenced disco sound, with incredible slow-building ethereal arrangements. On the B-Side, Men and Women invited friends ELIOT LIPP (Mush, Eastern Developments) and COUSIN COLE (Flagrant Fowl) to remix and reinterpret the title track of the EP, to fabulous results.

The South America EP is the first in an ongoing series of Men and Women EPs, available digitally and in limited edition 12" vinyl, on War and Moon. The spirit of future releases will be similar to the South America EP, inviting friends to collaborate and remix

Funckarma : Dubstoned EP1

The Highpoint Lowlife Label are set to drop a brand new EP from Funckarma in the latter part of this month. Made up of two Dutch brothers, Don and Roel Funcken, Funckarma released their first EP in 1999 on the Djak-Up Bitch (DUB) label. Since then they have unleashed a fury of releases on labels from Neo Ouija, n5MD, U-Cover, to Hymen, not including their work under other guises such as Cane, Quench, and their hip hop project with a trio of US MC’s under the name Shadow Huntaz, released on Skam records. We recently heard its five tracks and can confirm that the Funcken brothers have produced a cracking EP, imagine the Funckarma of old with their crunchy electronic wall of sound styled beats, abstract but accessible electronic rhythms and then throw some Dubstep influences into the mix.

There's a preview MP3 sample for those wishing to hear this EP available here

As well as releasing the EP, Funckarma will also be promoting the release of the record with two rare UK appearances, one at Plastic People in London on June 25th and another at Bristol's The Cube Cinema on June 27th. Support from Hyperdub's Ikonika, and Highpoint Lowlife's Fisk Industries.

Wild Willy Barrett : Moose Loose Kicking

RA 104 : Quiet Village

Resident Advisor #104 : Quiet Village
Joel Martin and Matt "Radio Slave" Edwards are the two men that make up Quiet Village, but it might be more accurate to say that the records that Martin and Edwards own are Quiet Village. Silent Movie, their debut full-length, is about as sample-heavy as any hip-hop offering, utilizing obscure and not-so-obscure sources to create up 21st century update on loungey exotica. Martin and Edwards aren't so much beat merchants, though, as much as they're interested in vibes. Silent Movie is a voyage into Balearic territory, where '50s eccentricity sits alongside the Chi-Lites and dub matches well with Italian film soundtracks.
The same can be said for the duo's RA podcast. An hour-long home-listening mix, the duo floats along with some of their favourite records in tow, including a healthy dose of dub (Rhythm & Sound, Jackie Mittoo), ambient, downtempo and even a little bit of Led Zeppelin.

Tracklist

01 Quiet Village - Victoria's Secret - !K7
02 Rhythm & Sound - Jah Version - Burial Mix
03 Jackie Mittoo - After Xmas - Soul Jazz
04 Warp 69 - Natural High (Global Communication remix) - Dedicated
05 Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Atlantic Records
06 Stelvio Cipriani - Main Theme from Blindman - Digitmovies
07 Quiet Village - Gold Rush - !K7
08 Sergio Mendes - Crystal Illusions - A&M
09 Celestine Okwu - Okwukwe Na Nchekwube - Soundway

Five Things for Friday

Next five things for Friday and this time thanks to the new Juno Player we have added some samples of the tracks below.

1. South Rakkas Crew : Mad Again Remixes EP - 12" : Mad Decent
The South Rakkas Crew return on the US Mad Decent label with a whole host of mixes of Mad Again. On remix duties are Jokers of the scene, Boy 8 Bit, Drop The Lime and our fave remix Fake Blood.
----------------------------------------------------------

2. Les Edits Du Golem : Volume 4
Great two tracker and the latest in the Les Golem disco edits series.
----------------------------------------------------------

3. Kluster : Admira CD : Important Records
Recorded in 1971, 'Admira' is sourced from the original master just discovered by Kluster member, and Tangerine Dream engineer, Klaus Freudigman. Amazing stuff, admittedly not for everyone, but for a recording from 1971 just goes to show how far ahead Kluster were in their collective thinking.
----------------------------------------------------------

4. DHS : The House Of God Ortin Cam mix : Missile
The pure techno classic House Of God from DHS gets yet another remix, proving once again how important the record actually is. This time its Ortin Cam aka Tom Macoye giving the track a workover, thankfully keeping the twisted cymbol sounds, heavy stomping beats and eerie vocal sample. Personally no mix will ever be as essential as the original but this is still a fine addition.
----------------------------------------------------------

5. LIQUID LIQUID - Slip In And Out Of Phenomenon
Liquid Liquid's first three, groundbreaking EPs re-released as part of this great retrospective on Domino, which also compiles a number of previously unreleased and live recordings. The sound of post punk NY and utterly essential

Five Things For Friday : Five fave cosmic, disco and spacey rock releases

Five of our fave cosmic disco and spacey rock releases from the past couple of weeks

1. Pocketknife & Cousin Cole : Tamborine Dream
Unmixed version Just released over in the US and soon to drop at select stores in Europe and the UK, this is a special edition of the Tamborine Dream mix, which features unmixed versions of most of the tracks originally used on Tamborine Dream with a few previous only available on a LTD picture disc 12"
----------------------------------------------------------

2. Quiet Village : Silent Movie
The CD was out last week so get yours now! Personally we are saving our pennies for the 2LP version which is due for release in a couple of weeks from now, but whatever way make sure you have this future classic LP in your collection!
----------------------------------------------------------

3. Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi : Cosmic Disco? Cosmic Rock

This is a superb seamlessly mixed 18 track mix featuring loads of exclusive edits, stuff played backwards and at the wrong speed! It's full of tough early 1980s new wave chuggers and rocky disco pounders. The 'Cosmic Rock' in the title refers to the number of tracks featuring guitars - this is a hard pounding dancefloor mix from beginning to end with nary a hint of spacey ambience! Available on CD and two separate 12's
----------------------------------------------------------

4. Commodity Place : No Ordinary Day : Coclea 12"

Excellent 12" featuring two superb Ash Ra/Tangerine Dream-inspired trippy cosmic masterpieces from Italy! A limited edition of only 300 copies and marks the first release of the new Coclea label - keep your eyes peeled for more great music from these guys!
----------------------------------------------------------

5. Q / Needa : The Voice Of Q : Rustys Dusty Disco 12"
Massively sought after track with original copies from back in 1982 changing hands for a few £'s, Q : Voice of Q has had a naughty bootleg released on Rustys Dusty Disco. 500 copies pressed
