Quiet Village : Silent Movie

Things have been a bit quiet on this here blog of late, mainly due to the fact that I have been super busy, but I had to drop something on this after the link appeared in my inbox this week courtesy of Lovely Jon, who compiled and also edited the piece for Quiet Village. Produced to promote their forthcoming new album Silent Movie, which is released on 28 April. Apparently the promo video has two minutes missing from the end, but its well worth checking out and is a great teaser for the forthcoming long player

Five Things For Friday (extended)

Five Things For Friday (Extended)

For reasons beyon
d our control (Goggle completely playing up and displaying a message that stated our PC was incompatiable) there was no last weeks five things for friday, so this week to make up for it we are doubling up and doing 10 things :

1. The Presets - My people - Modular
Presets return to Modular with a properly banging 12'', that fuses electrohouse with Depeche Mode. Remixes come courtesy of D.I.M., Kris Menace and a rather twisted one from Mouse On Mars who deconstruct the track My People

2. Maps / M83 - split 7"
Choice split 7" on Sonic Cathedral from Maps and M83. Maps remix M83 and M83 remix Maps. Proper mellow shoegazing electronica.

3. The Black Ghosts - Mixtape - Southern Fried CD
Twenty three track mixtape (CD) on Southern Fried from The Black Ghosts. Well put together and featuring some well selected songs, including the massive Boy-8-Bit : The suspense is killing me (which should be released on the Mad Decent label very soon), plus tracks from Siriusmo, Switch, The whip, Fake Blood and Bonde Do Role amongst others

4. Diskjokke - Flott Flyt - Full Pupp
Brilliant EP from Diskjokke. Flott Flyt was one of the stand out tracks from the full length Staying In CD and now its had a release all on its own and backed with 2 extra tracks (including one non CD cut) on Prins Thomas Full Pupp Label

5. Si Begg - Jetlag & Tinnitus Reworks Part 4 - Noodles 12"
Fourth in the Jetlag & Tinnitus remixes series from Si Begg. Six mixes, this time drafting in Osymyso and ex Spiral Tribe member Simon Carter aka Crystal Distortion

6. Addict x Mitch x Star Wars T-Shirts

7. Blacksand - Barn
Blacksand is Nick Franglen (one half of Lemon Jelly) and Charlie Casey. 'Barn' is their debut release and is issued as a limited edition of 1000 stunningly packaged, hand numbered albums, its a Rough Trade exclusive with a Willy Wonka styled idea with one of the cds having a golden ticket in it, entitling the holder to a personal performance by Blacksand in their front room. Barn is an hour of dark improvised electronica knocking shoulders with ambient. Well worth a punt!

8. Various Artists : Obsession - Bully Records CD
Excellent compilation of psychedelic rock from all over the world courtesy of Bully Records. The stuff here is from all over the world, incredibly hard to find and lovingly compiled with details of all the artists. The bands span continents, from India, South America and Turkey, bringing in local styles alongside music from Europe and America. The album was put together by Mike Davis of Academy Records in NYC with DJ Signify as executive producer.

9. Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles CD
First full length release from Crystal Castles and worthy of a place in anyone's collection. A mixture of the bands early hard to find tracks and a few new cuts.

V/Vm new releases

We are big fans of the V/Vm Test label around these parts, how could you not love a label where one of its earliest releases, back in 1998, was a project where V/Vm broke, scratched, split, taped and hammered 12" vinyls before packing them in bubble wrap sleeves in zip-lock bags with an A4 sheet with instructions to shoplift the vinyl from the shop it was placed in. Also without V/Vm, its very possible I would of not heard of one of my fave artists Goodiepal, as I first discovered his output on the DemonBag picture disc 7" series V/Vm released.

So its always a pleasure to hear of new releases and next month they treat us to not one, but two new releases.

First up, released on April 3rd, but available to pre order now, is a new 12" entitled "There was a fish..in..the percolator" V/Vm return once again to the town of Twin Peaks, culling audio and spoken word from this Northern American town. Following on from "
the owls are not what they seem" a 7"single released on English Muffin in 2001. Limited to just 175 copies, V/Vm raise the bar with the standard of packaging on this, each comes in an individually numbered red, brown or green silk screen printed sleeve by Berlin artist Motorboy.

Each copy also includes a detailed reproduction of the map found in Owl Cave. All the clues are there showing you how to enter the black lodge. Each map is numbered and signed. The centre label of the vinyl has been hand numbered on the A-Side and features the symbolic sycamore trees (hand drawn) around the centre label, whilst the B-side is signed and features David Lynch's own equation for Killer Bob

As well as the vinyl record you also get access to MP3's of the 12" plus the 2001 "Owls are not what they seem" 7". More info, images, sound samples and to buy your copy can all be found on V/Vm.

The second release on V/Vm Test for April is by The Stranger entitled "Bleaklow" again this is available to pre order right now. Available in two versions, a regular version and the deluxe expanded version. Both versions have a great attention to detail and are hand produced, with each coming in a silk screen printed sleeve by artist Motorboy with the regular in a dark grey / blue card sleeve and the expanded version in black on black printed sleeve. The expanded version is limited to just 100 copies and as well as the standard Bleaklow tracks also includes MP3 downloads of an additional 14 tracks.

As mentioned above both releases are available right now to buy and they will be shipped around the first week in April

More info on all the V/Vm test records releases and projects can be found on their site : http://brainwashed.com/vvm/

Lovely Jon : Grindhouse II Mix

Lovely Jon is back with the follow on from the original Grindhouse mix on Jigoku. Grindhouse Volume II : Tales of Sleaze & Sin takes its cue from flea pit 'grindhouse' cinemas where schlocky midnight movies would play to insalubrious lowlife audiences - the same cinemas which inspired the recent Quentin Tarentino film. Featuring loads of ultra-obscure movie snippets and film trailers alongside esoteric sleaze film soundtracks and more!
If you are a fan of his previous mixes then make sure you get a copy of this quick. Available now at Sounds Of The Universe which also hosts sample snippets of the mix and his previous mixes
